The name "Castello Brown" derives from Montague Yeats Brown, the English consul in Genoa and owner of the building from 1867 to 1905, but its origins date back to the Middle Ages when the Genoese erected it in a dominant position overlooking the sea to defend the Gulf of Portofino.
Over the centuries, it underwent various renovation works and enlargements by prominent historical figures such as Gian Maria Oliato and Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1867, the English Consul Brown purchased the fortress, and in 1870, he planted the two famous pine trees himself on the main terrace for his wedding day. These trees dominated the town from above for years, becoming symbols and distinctive elements of the Castle. The Consul passed away in 1905, leaving the Castle to his children, who guarded it until 1949 when they sold it to the Baber family. In 1961, the Municipality of Portofino acquired the Castle from the Baber family, beginning to use its spaces to host various types of public and private events. This is definitely a venue to consider if you are searching for wedding venues near water in Italy.
